This quiz is based off of the study “Prevalence of Optimal Metabolic Health in American Adults: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2009–2016,” by Araújo, J., Cai, J., & Stevens, J.
The study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2009 and 2016 to estimate the prevalence of optimal metabolic health in American adults. They defined optimal metabolic health as having optimal levels of five factors without the use of medication: blood glucose, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, blood pressure, and waist circumference.
According to the results of the study, only 12.2% of American adults were metabolically healthy, which underscores the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in the U.S. population. This result suggests that the majority of the American adult population is at greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other serious health conditions associated with poor metabolic health.
